ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard
Throughout the world, and across a wide range of industries, workers perform activities that endanger their health and safety; sometimes risking their lives and their wellbeing to earn a living. ISO 45001 is the first international standard for occupational health and safety and was created to assist organisations in improving employee safety, reducing risks in the workplace and to create better and safer working conditions.
ISO 45001 provides organisations with a clear framework to improve their Occupational Health and Safety management systems, aiming to create a safe and healthy workplace for employees as well as visitors. This International standard is directed at the top management tier of an organisation and was created to establish a framework to improve employee occupational Health and safety, mitigating workplace risks effectively and create safer working conditions globally.
ISO 45001 is its own distinct and independent standard and will be phased in over a period of 3 years, a period that commenced in middle 2018. ISO 45001 is process-based, focused on the interaction between an organisation and its business environment, dynamic in all clauses, considering both risk and opportunities and includes the views of interested parties.

ISO 45001 was developed by a committee of experts in the field of occupational health and safety. It builds upon the approaches of other generic management systems such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, while also taking into account other international standards in the OH&S field, including OHSAS 18001 and the ILO-OSH guidelines of the International Labour Organisation. ISO 45001 helps users manage risks as a business approach, rather than a standards approach, as is the case with some previous methods.
The migration to ISO 45001 is likely to be far simpler than many organisations fear. The enhancements and the requirements of this standard mean that many of the necessary elements may already be in place if the organisation had taken previous proactive steps to manage occupational health and safety.
