In 2015, the United Nations put a 15-year plan together in order to address some of the most pressing issues in the world. The goals set in this plan have become known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They focus on economic, environmental and societal issues, areas which are all directly addressed by ISO standards. Therefore, these standards provide companies with the relevant tools to contribute to the worldwide effort to achieving these goals.

There were 17 different goals identified by the UN that they felt address most pressing issues around the globe and are essential for the future sustainability of our Earth. The goals are as follows:
- No poverty
- Zero hunger
- Good health and well-being
- Quality education
- Gender equality
- Clean water and sanitation
- Affordable and clean energy
- Decent work and economic growth
- Industry, innovation and infrastructure
- Reduced inequalities
- Sustainable cities and communities
- Responsible consumption and production
- Climate action
- Life below water
- Life on land
- Peace, justice and strong institutions
- Partnership for the goals
For each of these goals, the ISO has identified standards that make the most significant contribution. Below is a list of standards the ISO has identified for each of the goals. These identified standards will help guide those organisations that want to make a difference and contribute to the UN’s SDGs.
ISO has published over 22000 standards and related documents that provide frameworks and guidelines to assist businesses in their contribution to these goals. Of the 22000 standards, over 3000 of them are directly applicable to each of the sustainable development goals the UN set out.
In doing so, the ISO has given businesses across the globe the opportunity to contribute to the UN SDGs as well as the sustainability of our planet. If every business around the globe conformed to these specific ISO standards, we would reach those goals before the proposed year 2030.
