With the sheer amount of goods that are imported and exported every single day, the world’s economy has and continues to become increasingly more globalised. However, because of the high-rate of transportation of goods around the world, to different countries, provinces, cities, and towns, some consumers find themselves pulling the short straw. This short straw comes in the form of faulty goods and unsatisfactory performance of products.
It is for this reason, a new international standard for consumer warranties has been published, which aims to protect everyone within the supply chain, from manufacturers and suppliers to consumers. This standard reduces the likelihood of faulty goods, protects manufacturers, and enhances confidence in every aspect of the deal. This standard has been given the name ISO 22059:2020 – Guidelines on consumer warranties/guarantees.
These guidelines set out requirements for sound warranties or guarantees so that they will meet the reasonable expectation of consumers. It explicitly states what is and what is not covered by product warranties and guarantees, the time frame of coverage, as well as the manufacturer or supplier’s expectations of consumers. They also include remedial actions that should be taken if a product does fail or not performing satisfactorily.

ISO 22059:2020 is designed to help both the consumer and the supplier understand their role as well as their expectations in a successful transaction.
Due to the rapid expansion of developing economies, millions of new consumers from developing countries have been included in the global market. This inclusion, while great for the economy and standard of living, has led to the levels of protection by consumers’ law and ethical business practices being much lower than they are in the developed world. Therefore, this standard ensures that there is an acceptable minimum level of consumer protection for supply chains across the globe.
