As technology and applications have evolved over the last decade, so has the need to ensure compatibility between them and compliance with relevant standards. It is for this exact reason that the ISO has introduced new biometric data International Standards.
The ISO and IEC standards bodies define biometrics as, “the automated recognition of individuals based on their biological and behavioural characteristics.”
The use of biometric data is to verify the identity of a person using their unique physical attributes, such as their fingerprint or their behavioural characteristics. Biometrics have become more prevalent in our every day lives, especially in identity verification, fingerprints or facial recognition.
The coding information behind biometric technology, known as biometric data exchange formats, often contains highly sensitive data, thus, to avoid issues with the exchange and use of that data, the experts are developing a series of additional standards.

The first standards of the new series concerning biometric data have recently been published. They include:
- ISO/IEC 39794-1, Information technology – Extensible biometric data interchange formats – Part 1: Framework
- ISO/IEC 39794-4, Information technology – Extensible biometric data interchange formats – Part 4: Finger image data
- ISO/IEC 39794-5, Information technology – Extensible biometric data interchange formats – Part 5: Face image data
These new International Standards will replace the ISO/IEC 19794 series for data interchange formats.
Future additions will be made to the ISO/IEC 39794 series including specific parts relating iris, vascular, full-body image data as well as data on the way a person walks.
Standards regarding biometric data are critical in this day and age due to the often sensitive nature of the data.
